VRV / VRF System: HP to Ton Conversion
A Quick Guide for Professionals
Introduction
In modern HVAC systems like VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) or VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow), capacity is often expressed in HP (Horsepower) instead of Tons. But many technicians and customers are more familiar with Tonnage (TR). So, understanding HP to Ton conversion is very important for proper system selection and installation.
What is VRV / VRF System?
A VRV system (Variable Refrigerant Volume) and VRF system (Variable Refrigerant Flow) refer to the same advanced multi-zone air conditioning technology. The term "VRV" is a trademark of Daikin, while "VRF" is the generic industry term used by other brands like Mitsubishi, LG, Samsung, and Carrier. These systems work by using a single outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units. The outdoor unit varies the flow of refrigerant to each indoor unit based on real-time demand making them highly energy-efficient compared to traditional split systems.
A VRV/VRF system is an advanced air conditioning system that can control refrigerant flow based on cooling demand.
It is widely used in:
- Hotels
- Offices
- Shopping malls
- Large homes
Key Features of VRV/VRF Systems
- One outdoor unit serves multiple indoor units (up to 30+ in large systems)
- Individual zone control for each room or area
- Energy-efficient inverter-driven compressors
- Suitable for commercial buildings, hotels, offices, and large residences
- Capacities typically range from 8 HP to 54 HP or more
Why HP is Used Instead of Ton?
Manufacturers (like Daikin, Mitsubishi, etc.) use HP because:
- It represents compressor capacity
- It is easier for modular system design
- Helps in accurate load matching

The Formula
HP = Ton ÷ 0.8
HP = Ton × 1.25
Ton = 10 × 0.8 = 8 Ton
HP = 8 × 1.25 = 10 HP
| Capacity (HP) | Capacity (Tons) |
|---|---|
| 1 HP | 0.8 Ton |
| 2 HP | 1.6 Ton |
| 3 HP | 2.4 Ton |
| 4 HP | 3.2 Ton |
| 5 HP | 4.0 Ton |
| 8 HP | 6.4 Ton |
| 10 HP | 8.0 Ton |
| 16 HP | 12.8 Ton |
Note: 1 HP ≈ 0.8 Ton (Based on VRV/VRF system conversion formula)
